About UsOur mission here at the Department of Anesthesiology at SUNY
Downstate is to provide education, training, and experience in an
atmosphere of mutual respect among instructors and residents.. We
seek to provide an environment that promotes the acquisition of the
knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, and attitudes essential to the
practice of anesthesiology.
The primary goal of the residency training program in Anesthesiology is
to provide an organized education program with guidance and supervision
of the resident, facilitating the resident's professional and personal
development while ensuring safe and appropriate care for patients.
Throughout the course of training, our residents assume progressively
greater responsibility, consistent with individual growth in clinical
experience, knowledge and skill.
In addition to clinical skills and medical knowledge, the program
emphasizes interpersonal skills, effective communication, and
professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and
systems-based practice. The objectives of the residency program
are to ensure that its residents, by the time they graduate, assume
responsibility and act responsibly and with integrity; demonstrate a
commitment to excellence and ethical principles of clinical care,
including confidentiality of patient information, informed consent, and
business practices; demonstrate respect and regard for the needs of
patients and society that supersedes self-interest; and work effectively
as a member of a health care team or other professional group. By
the end of residency training, all graduating residents must demonstrate
sufficient professional ability to practice competently and
independently.
