The CA-2 Primer

  • Familiarize yourself with the PACU policies at each institution before you go there
  • Stock your emergency airway box as soon as you come off of call break (you never know when you will be called)  DO NOT ASSUME THE AM PERSON HAS FULLY STOCKED THE BOX YOU MUST CHECK IT YOURSELF
  • Change any drugs in your emergency airway box to a fresh set if they are not premixed
  • For OB calls change all emergency drugs to a fresh setup in the 2 OB Ors
  • Recheck the OB OR’s when you come off of call break
  • Stock your epidural cart with gloves and kits
  • Besides OR emergency drugs always have in each OB OR and epidural cart:
    • 20 cc syringe (2ml of HCO3 + 18 ml 3% chloroprocaine)
    • 10 cc syringe (1 ml HCO3 + 9ml 2% lidocaine)
  • Don’t forget LMAs in your OB Ors
  • If the first year becomes overwhelmed help them with their pre-ops/ emergency cases
  • Don’t forget to make dinner plans!
  • When on call at KCHC don’t forget to check the MYSIS for pain consults overnight
  • WHEN WRITING PAIN MEDS IN THE PACU DO NOT FORGET TO CHECK ALLERGIES BEFOREHAND!!!
  • NO MORPHINE FOR ESRD PATIENTS UNLESS SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED BY AN ANESTHESIA ATTENDING
  • When starting Neuro and Cardiac Refer to those sections on the website for helpful tips
  • When on call at KCHC help out with the emergency cases/pre-ops if needed
